Step-by-step itinerary
Sunset and bioluminescence kayak tour
- Depart from Friday Harbor waterfront
- Kayak in Griffin Bay near wildlife
- Enjoy sunset paddle
- Observe bioluminescent sea life at night
- Return to Friday Harbor waterfront
The experience
Griffin Bay, about 10 minutes south of Friday Harbor, is where the paddle begins. You start with a sunset crossing in daylight, paddling among the seals and birds that inhabit the bay. As darkness falls, the environment shifts: the water around your kayak begins to illuminate with bioluminescent sea life, a phenomenon rare enough that few places on earth offer it alongside a clear night sky. The 3-hour outing is timed so you experience both the transition and the full glow.
All kayaking gear comes with you, along with a dry bag for personal items. A live guide in English leads the group and manages the pace. The tour departs and returns to the Friday Harbor waterfront, so there's no second vehicle or transfer to arrange once you arrive. Public transportation options are available nearby if you're staying elsewhere on the islands.
Note that June, July, and August tours end after the last ferry leaves Friday Harbor at 9:50pm, so plan your return accordingly. You'll need to complete waivers with Outdoor Odysseys directly before the tour begins.
