The experience
American Camp sits on the edge of the Salish Sea, and this hike moves through its grasslands and rugged coastline while a naturalist guide interprets the landscape: the geology beneath your feet, the plants and animals you encounter, and the historical moment that shaped the place. You're watching for red foxes, bald eagles, orca and humpback whales as they pass through the water. The guide handles the natural history. You handle the terrain.
The tour runs two and a half hours and includes hotel pickup, so you don't arrange transport. Trekking poles come with you, and the company provides snacks, coffee and tea along the way. This is the only on-island outfit running natural history hikes, which means the guide is trained in the ecology and the story of the place, not just the route. One percent of the company's profits go to environmental causes in the San Juan Islands.
