Kayaking from Friday Harbor: Griffin Bay & Dinner Island
You paddle past Dinner Island in the tidal zone, not watch from a boat.
A 3-hour kayaking activity departing from Friday Harbor that takes you by vehicle to Jackson's Beach, then out onto Griffin Bay to circumnavigate Dinner Island in the shadow of Mt. Baker. The guide coaches basic paddling and safety on the water, and pickup and drop-off happen at the Friday Harbor waterfront. Morning and afternoon departures run year-round, and children from age 3 are welcome.

The experience
You start at the Friday Harbor waterfront, where the guide meets you for pickup. A short drive takes you to Jackson's Beach, where you'll get coached through basic paddling and safety techniques before pushing off onto the water. The route circles Dinner Island through Griffin Bay's tidal zone, with views of the Olympic Mountains rising above Cattle Pass and Mt. Baker in the distance. The whole paddle takes about three hours, and the guide stays with your group the entire time.
All kayaking and safety gear comes with the booking (paddle, life jacket, spray skirt) plus a dry bag for your belongings. The vehicle is air-conditioned, which matters on the drive out and back. Pelagic wildlife (seals, sea lions, occasional whales depending on season) move through these waters, so you're paddling in active habitat, not a sheltered lagoon. The tidal zone around Dinner Island shifts the water conditions through the day, which is why the guide's real-time coaching on the water makes a difference for beginners.
Morning and afternoon departures let you pick the time that fits your schedule. The activity suits all fitness levels, though it does require you to be comfortable in a kayak for the duration. If you have spinal injuries, this one is not a fit.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (13 to 17 years); Child (3 to 12 years). Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What's the water like in Griffin Bay when we paddle?
Griffin Bay is a tidal zone with moderate currents and open water conditions. You'll be paddling in active habitat where pelagic wildlife moves through, so the guide coaches you on reading the water and staying safe in real conditions, not a protected cove.
Do I need kayaking experience to book this?
No. The tour is beginner-friendly and family-suitable from age 3 up. The guide coaches basic paddling and safety techniques on the beach before you launch, so you learn the fundamentals before you're on the water.
Is the drive to Jackson's Beach included in the three hours?
The three-hour duration covers the full activity from pickup at Friday Harbor. The short drive to Jackson's Beach and the coaching on the beach happen within that window, so paddling time is somewhat less than the full three hours.
