The experience

“You ever tried to carve a face out of wood?” That’s what Sione asked, grinning, as he handed me this smooth chunk of Big Island wood. I just shook my head, honestly a little nervous. The workshop was up in Holualoa, with that kind of soft morning light that makes everything look gentler than it is. There was the faint smell of sawdust and something sweet, maybe plumeria? Anyway, Sione’s hands moved so confidently, like he’d been doing this since before he could walk (which, turns out, isn’t far off). He’s a fourth-generation master carver from Tonga, and you can tell. His stories sort of drifted between English and Tongan, and sometimes I just watched the way his knife caught the grain.
