The experience

I didn’t expect the quiet when we first walked into the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Just a soft hum from a group of kids watching a dance rehearsal, and the smell of cedar drifting in from somewhere. Our guide, Sam (he’s Tlingit, he told us right away), waved us over to join a small circle. He started talking about how his grandmother used to carve masks, and I realized I was holding my breath listening to him describe the old stories behind them. The place isn’t like a museum at all: people are chatting, laughing, sometimes singing under their breath as they set up for something else.

We wandered outside after that, following Sam through the trees down toward Lake Tiulana. There are these six traditional dwellings set up along the water. They look simple at first but inside you see all these details: fur-lined beds, tools made from bone, little baskets with patterns I’ve never seen before. Sam showed us how his people used to fish with nets made from spruce roots (he joked he’s terrible at it). The air smelled sharp and cold near the lake, even in summer. At one point I just stopped walking because you could hear nothing but wind and some distant drumming from back at the main hall.

Later I tried to say “Ch’k’iqadi” in the gift shop: Li laughed when I tried it (I probably butchered it), but she explained it means “things we buy.” All the art there is actually made by Alaska Native artists. I picked up this tiny carved seal that still sits on my desk now. It felt good knowing my money went straight back to them, not just some random souvenir stand. We left with cold hands and warm bread from a vendor out front (I wish I’d asked what was in it). Even now, I keep thinking about those stories Sam told. The way he said they’re not just history but living things people carry every day.
