The experience
You start from your Anchorage hotel, picked up and driven about an hour to one of the guide's favorite rivers in Southcentral Alaska. On a clear day you'll see as many as four mountain ranges across Southcentral Alaska while you're there. The guide teaches you the basics of fly-fishing on the water itself, not in a classroom, and gets you casting and catching in a short time. If you've never done this before, that's the point. If you're already experienced, the guide adjusts to your level.
You'll spend 4 to 6 hours on the river fishing for rainbow trout, arctic grayling and dolly varden, ranging from 12 to 24 inches, with the occasional larger fish. Hip waders keep your own clothes dry while you wade. All the gear comes with you (Orvis fly rods, reels, flies and lures), and if you decide fly-fishing isn't for you partway through, regular fishing gear is there to switch to. This is catch-and-release fishing, so the fish you land go back to the water alive. The guide does the messy work and heavy lifting. Your job is to fish and enjoy the day.
When you're done, the guide drives you back to your hotel. You'll need clothing suitable for a day in the Alaska wilderness and a moderate level of fitness to walk about a mile total on uneven, slippery trail and river rock. The guide is happy to provide assistance if you need it to make the trip work for you.
