The Experience

I’ll be honest, I almost bailed before we even started—my youngest forgot her socks, so there was a last-minute scramble in the car. We showed up a bit flustered and probably five minutes late (sorry, Chris). But our guide just grinned and handed us helmets like it was no big deal. There was this salty breeze coming off American Beach, and you could hear gulls squabbling over something behind the dunes. It felt less like a tour and more like meeting up with someone who just happened to know all the best spots for an electric skateboard ride on Amelia Island.

The boards looked intimidating at first—sleek and kind of futuristic—but Chris gave us a demo that made it look easy. I wobbled at first (my daughter laughed), but after a few tries, gliding over the packed sand felt weirdly natural. The sun was out but not too hot; you could smell sunscreen and seaweed mixed together. When we stopped near the jetties to look for shark teeth, Chris knelt right down in the wet sand with us, showing us what to look for. My son actually found one—a tiny black triangle—and he still carries it around in his pocket. I tried saying “thank you” in my worst attempt at surfer slang; Chris just shook his head and told me to stick to riding.

We cruised back along the beach as people watched—some waved, some just stared (probably jealous). I kept thinking how much lighter everything felt out there, even if I did nearly wipe out once dodging a stray volleyball. The GoPro was rolling most of the time, so there are these goofy videos of us shouting into the wind or pointing out dolphins in the distance. It wasn’t perfect—sand got everywhere, obviously—but honestly that’s half the fun.
