The Experience

I’ll be honest — I’d never heard about Amelia Island’s “eight flags” before this trip. We started in the historic downtown, where our guide (Jim — he grew up here and seems to know every porch creak) pointed at a weathered sign with all these different flags. Spanish, French, British… even a pirate one, which made me laugh because I always thought pirates were just movie stuff. Jim said they were real trouble here, though. The air smelled faintly salty and sweet from a bakery somewhere nearby. I kept thinking how small the streets felt for so much history.

Driving out toward old Fernandina, the landscape changed — more mossy oaks, fewer tourists.
