The experience
The tour starts at Christiansted Bypass Overlook, where clear days reveal the neighboring island of St. Thomas across the water. From there you drive into Christiansted's heart to pass Gallows Bay, a historic harbor tied to the island's colonial and maritime past, then swing around Altona Lagoon Park, a coastal reserve with walking paths and birdlife. The audio guide walks you through the stories as you go: why the island drives on the left despite being US territory, the woman the Queen Mary Highway is named after and her role in the 1878 rebellion called "The Fireburn," and the role of Fort Frederik, a striking red-brick structure in Frederiksted that was central to the abolition of slavery in the Danish West Indies.
The whole route takes between 45 minutes and just over an hour, depending on how often you stop. You're in control: the GPS starts the audio when you reach each point, and you can replay sections, pause to explore on foot, or linger at any stop. The app works offline, so you don't need data or a signal once you've downloaded the maps and audio before you leave Christiansted.
You'll need your own smartphone and headphones to run the tour. The app is available for both Android and iOS, and once you book, you get lifetime access to the audio, maps and directions: before your trip and after it, so you can revisit the stories anytime.
