The experience

The Scout leaves Compass Point Marina in St. Thomas at 9am and heads straight into open water. A 39-foot Nor-Tech is built for speed and a dry ride even in rough conditions, which means you cover the distance to the British Virgin Islands fast and stay comfortable doing it. You clear customs at West End Tortola on the way in, then the day opens up: The Baths on Virgin Gorda, where granite boulders frame turquoise pools you wade through; Norman Island, where you jump off the Willy T (a moored bar barge) and snorkel the reefs; Jost Van Dyke and Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay, where a painkiller, the island's signature drink, waits at the water's edge. The route and timing are yours to shape within reason, and the captain knows where the fish are and where the crowds thin out.

Snorkeling gear is on board, along with a cooler, ice, soda and bottled water. Lunch is on you, but the boat carries what you need to stay fed and hydrated through the day. You're back at US Customs before heading home, and the whole charter runs seven hours. Up to six passengers fit in one booking. Larger groups add an extra fee per person. A live English-speaking guide is part of the package, and because this is a private charter, your group is the only one aboard: no time wasted waiting for stragglers or listening to a script built for twenty people.

Choose the full-day BVI trip if you want all three major stops and the open-water crossing; the full-day USVI-only option keeps you in US waters and cuts the customs hassle; the half-day USVI trip works if you have a morning or afternoon free but not a full day. Infants sit on an adult's lap, and service animals are welcome. The boat is not suitable for travelers with spinal injuries due to the speed and motion of the ride.

Is this one for you?The full-day BVI trip gives you three islands and open-water cruising in a single day, which is only possible because the 39-foot boat moves fast and the charter is private: no waiting for other groups. Pick the half-day USVI option if you have only a morning or afternoon free, or the full-day USVI-only trip if you want to skip the customs process and stay in US waters.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is The Baths like when we get there?

The Baths on Virgin Gorda is a natural formation of massive granite boulders stacked along the shoreline, creating pools and passages you wade through between the rocks and the sea. It's one of the most photographed spots in the Caribbean, and the private charter gets you there early enough to move through it before the day-trip crowds arrive.

Do we snorkel at more than one place?

Yes. Norman Island is the main snorkeling stop, where you jump off the Willy T (a floating bar anchored offshore) and snorkel the reefs. The full-day BVI trip includes additional snorkeling opportunities depending on conditions and what you want to see.

What happens at Jost Van Dyke?

Jost Van Dyke is where you stop at Soggy Dollar Bar in White Bay, the beach bar famous for its painkillers: a rum-based drink served cold. You can swim, relax on the sand, or just grab a drink and soak in the island vibe before heading back.

Is lunch included in the charter price?

Lunch is not included, but the boat carries a cooler with ice, soda and bottled water. You can bring your own food or grab something at one of the island stops: Soggy Dollar has food, and other spots along the route have options too.

What's the difference between the full-day BVI trip and the full-day USVI-only option?

The full-day BVI trip crosses to the British Virgin Islands and includes The Baths, Norman Island, and Jost Van Dyke: three major stops with customs clearance on both ends. The full-day USVI-only trip stays in US waters, which means no customs process and a simpler day, but fewer islands to explore.
