The experience

We were already bouncing over the sand by the time I realized how quiet it was out here. Our guide, Salim, just grinned and pointed ahead: Fossil Rock looked like it was glowing in the late sun. I didn’t expect to actually see real fossils up close (Salim handed me one, rough and cool in my palm, he said it’s millions of years old, which made me laugh nervously). The wind kept shifting, carrying this dry-earth smell mixed with something almost sweet. It’s strange what you notice when there’s nothing but sand and sky for miles.

After the buggy ride, we stopped near Camel Rock for a nature walk. Salim knew every plant by name. He even showed us a tiny flower that only blooms after rare rain. I tried to repeat its Arabic name but totally butchered it. He laughed and said I had “desert tongue.” There was this odd silence sometimes, broken only by our footsteps or a distant bird. We tried sandboarding too. I fell twice before getting the hang of it. Honestly? Sand is less forgiving than snow.

By dusk, we reached our private setup: a low table surrounded by lanterns flickering against the dunes. Someone had already started the campfire. The air cooled fast.
