Walk through a geopolitical oddity and centuries-old stone architecture on the east coast

A private tour of Fujairah and Khorfakkan combines six to seven hours of driving and walking through coastal and mountain sites, including the Al Badiyah Mosque (built around 1446), the Khor Fakkan Waterfall, the mountaintop Al Suhub Rest House, Fujairah Museum, and the Madha-Nahwa counter-enclave: a rare territorial anomaly where Emirati land sits fully enclosed by Oman. The tour includes private transportation, admission fees, bottled water, and an English-speaking guide. Pickup is included. Lunch is not part of the package.

The experience

If you have a free afternoon in the Emirates and want to see something most visitors miss, this tour takes you across the Hajar Mountains to the Gulf of Oman coast. The route moves through Khorfakkan, a town on Sharjah's east side, where you'll stop at the Khor Fakkan Waterfall: a man-made cascade built in 2020 against the natural rock face above the corniche. From there, the tour climbs to Al Suhub Rest House, a circular, saucer-shaped building perched at roughly 580 to 600 meters above sea level, with 360-degree views of sea and mountains from its two levels. The structure sits on a landscaped site with around 8,700 trees planted across the grounds.

The core of the tour centers on three historical and cultural stops. Al Badiyah Mosque, on the coast near Dibba, dates to around 1446 and is built entirely from local stone, mud brick, and plaster: no wood in the roof. Its four unequal domes rest on a single central pillar, and the thick walls carry decorative carvings and niches for Qur'ans. Fujairah Museum holds two main sections: Heritage Halls displaying traditional occupations (fishing, weaving, pottery), weapons, costumes, and a model palm-leaf house; and Antiquities Halls with arrowheads, vessels, beads, and tools from archaeological sites, including an ostrich egg from around 2500 BC. The Madha-Nahwa enclave is the rarest stop: a territorial anomaly where the UAE (Sharjah) holds a small counter-enclave fully surrounded by Omani territory, home to about 40 houses, a clinic, school, and police station. The guide explains how this border complexity arose from British-era mapping and remains one of only a couple of such arrangements worldwide.

Travel and refreshment time accounts for roughly two hours of the day. The tour also includes a stop at a traditional souq against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains, where you can browse clay pots, carpets, woven baskets, Persian-style rugs, and locally made wooden furniture, or grab grilled corn and local snacks. The route is mild and the terrain accessible. All areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and the tour suits all fitness levels.

Top questions

What is the Al Badiyah Mosque, and why does it matter?

Al Badiyah Mosque, built around 1446 on the coast near Dibba, is one of the oldest mosques in the UAE. It's constructed entirely from local stone, mud brick, and plaster with four unequal domes supported by a single central pillar: a rare architectural design that survives from the 15th century.

What makes the Madha-Nahwa enclave so unusual?

Madha-Nahwa is a counter-enclave where UAE territory (Sharjah) sits completely surrounded by Oman, creating a rare geopolitical anomaly. It's home to about 40 houses, a clinic, school, and police station, and is one of only a couple of such territorial complexities in the world.

What will I see at the Fujairah Museum?

The museum has Heritage Halls showing traditional occupations like fishing and weaving, weapons, costumes, and a model of an old palm-leaf house; and Antiquities Halls with arrowheads, vessels, beads, and tools from archaeological sites, including an ostrich egg dating to around 2500 BC.

How much time does the tour spend traveling versus at the sites?

Travel and refreshment time accounts for roughly two hours of the six to seven hour tour, leaving the rest for stops at the waterfall, Al Suhub Rest House, the mosque, museum, the enclave, and the souq.

Is this tour accessible for people with mobility concerns?

Yes, all areas and surfaces are wheelchair accessible, and transportation options are wheelchair accessible. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller with specialized infant seats available.
