The Experience

The first thing I remember is that weird hush when we left the city — just this low hum from the tires as our 4WD rolled out toward the Dubai desert. Our guide, Kareem, kept cracking jokes about “city people” getting sand in their shoes (guilty). Then suddenly, those red dunes showed up like waves. The light was already changing — kind of golden but also sharp. I didn’t expect it to smell so dry and clean out there, almost like warm stone and dust. We stopped for a second at the top of a dune and honestly, my heart was racing — not just from the ride but from how huge and empty it all felt.

Kareem grinned before taking us down the steepest dune — everyone whooped or screamed (I did both). The sandboarding part was hilarious; I fell twice before figuring out how to balance.
