The experience

The 4×4 picks you up from your Dubai or Sharjah hotel and drives you out to the red dunes. Once there, you spend 30 minutes dune bashing (the vehicle climbs and drops across the sand while you hold on), then you stop to try sandboarding on the slopes and photograph the sunset. The pace is fast enough to feel the rush but steady enough that the driver handles all the technical work.

At the desert camp, you ride a camel, pose for a photo with a falcon, and get henna applied if you want it. The camp serves a live BBQ buffet with vegetarian and meat options, fresh fruit and sweets, plus unlimited water, tea, coffee and soft drinks. Three live shows run through the evening: belly dancing, a fire performance and a Tanura spinning-skirt show. You can watch from the seating area or move around the camp.

The whole experience runs about six hours from pickup to drop-off. Children from age one are welcome, and infant seats are available for an additional fee if needed. The guide stays with the group throughout and speaks English.

It's thrilling but the vehicle and driver handle the technical work, so you just hold on and feel the ride.
