The Experience
We left the city behind in the late afternoon, watching glass towers fade into open sand as our driver steered toward the Hatta Oman road. The air felt warmer out here, and I could taste dust on my lips before we even hit the red dunes. Our guide grinned, cranking up some local music just as the 4x4 started its wild climb—honestly, my stomach dropped more than once during those dune bashing runs. Sand sprayed up against the windows and every so often, we’d stop for photos; the light on the dunes turned everything gold and orange, and it was quieter than I expected except for the wind.
At the camp, we were greeted with sweet tea and cardamom coffee—tiny cups, but strong enough to wake you up again. Camels waited nearby for short rides; their fur was rougher than I thought, and they made these low grumbling sounds that made everyone laugh. Some folks tried sandboarding down a steep slope (I wiped out right away), while others just watched from the shade with cold sodas in hand. There was henna painting too; I still had faint traces of mine days later.
As dusk settled in, smoke from the BBQ drifted through the camp. The buffet had everything—grilled chicken, shawarma wraps, falafel, salads—and people kept going back for seconds. The evening picked up with belly dancing, a fire show that drew everyone close to the stage, and then a spinning Tannura dancer whose skirt seemed to never stop moving. By the time we climbed back into the car for our ride home (around 9:45pm), I realized how much sand I’d collected in my shoes—and how glad I was that we didn’t have to drive ourselves back to Dubai.
