The Experience

I didn’t expect the sand to be so soft — it got everywhere, honestly, but that’s part of the deal on this Dubai red dune evening desert safari. Our driver, Karim, picked us up right from the hotel in one of those big 4x4s (felt like a spaceship inside). He played Arabic pop on low volume and told us stories about his childhood outside Sharjah while we drove out of the city. The traffic faded behind us and suddenly it was just sky and sand — kind of surreal how fast it all changes out here.

Dune bashing was wild. I mean, my stomach did flips but in a good way — you know when you laugh because you’re nervous? That was me. We stopped for photos as the sun started dropping; everything turned gold and pink for maybe ten minutes. I tried sandboarding too (not gracefully), and there was this faint smell of spice in the air from someone’s thermos nearby. The wind picked up a bit — not cold, but enough to make my scarf flap around. Karim showed us how to tie it properly, which I definitely needed.

At the Bedouin camp, they handed out tiny cups of cardamom coffee and dates — honestly, I could’ve just sat there eating those all night. There were camels waiting for rides (they look grumpy but are actually pretty chill), and a falconer let me hold his bird for a photo. Later on, we ate outside under strings of lights: grilled lamb, salads with mint, smoky eggplant dip. The belly dancer winked at my friend when he tried to clap along off-beat; everyone laughed. There was henna painting too (mine smudged because I’m impatient) and a fire show that made everyone go quiet for a second.

I still think about lying back on one of those low cushions after dinner, looking up at stars that felt impossibly close — no city noise at all. Someone pointed out Orion’s Belt in Arabic; I can’t remember the word now but it sounded beautiful. The drive back was sleepy and quiet except for Karim humming softly up front. So yeah… if you want an evening that feels both loud and peaceful somehow, this is it.
