The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the soft crunch of red sand under my shoes as we stepped out of the Land Cruiser. Our driver, Khalid, grinned and pointed out the tallest dune—he called it “Big Boss.” The air felt warm but not suffocating, just a dry breeze carrying hints of cardamom from somewhere nearby. We buckled up for dune bashing, and honestly, my stomach did a flip or two as we slid down those steep slopes. It’s not just a drive—it’s a wild ride, and you’ll probably laugh and grab the seat more than once.

After the adrenaline rush, we stopped at the top of a dune for photos. The view stretched forever—just waves of red sand and the sun starting to dip. I tried sandboarding for the first time; it’s trickier than it looks, but falling is half the fun. At camp, the welcome was pure hospitality: tiny cups of Arabic coffee, sweet dates, and the smell of grilled meat already in the air. I got a quick henna tattoo while my friend tried on a kandura for photos. Later, we watched the fire show and Tanura dance—honestly, the spinning lights are hypnotic. Dinner was relaxed, sitting on cushions under the stars, with both veggie and meat options. If you’re into shisha, there’s a spot just off to the side where locals gather and chat. The night ended with a fireworks show—unexpected and kind of magical in the quiet desert.
