The Experience

"Did you see the Palm from up there?" That's the question you'll be asking yourself the moment the helicopter lifts off and Dubai spreads out below you like a blueprint. The 17-minute flight takes you over the skyline, the coastline, the man-made islands — all of it small enough to fit in one view. You're strapped in, the city's getting smaller, and suddenly the scale of what's been built here actually makes sense. No narration, no forced commentary, just you and the window and the fact that you're flying over one of the world's most recognizable skylines.

After you land and catch your breath, there's a few hours before the evening part kicks in. The dhow cruise on Dubai Marina starts around sunset, and that's when the second half of the day takes over. You board through Marina Mall, climb onto a traditional wooden boat, and the city lights are already starting to come on. The Marina itself is the largest man-made marina in the world — which sounds like marketing until you're actually floating in the middle of it and the skyscrapers are reflecting off the water on both sides. Ninety minutes of cruising means you're not rushed; you move slowly enough to actually look at things. There's an open-air upper deck if you want the breeze, and a fully air-conditioned lower deck if the evening gets cool.
