The Experience

We stepped onto the catamaran at Dubai Marina just as the city lights started to wake up. The crew greeted us with these cold welcome drinks—kind of citrusy, I think?—and showed us to our seats on the open-air deck. The air was warm but not sticky up top; if you want A/C you can sit below, but honestly the breeze is better unless it’s August.

As we drifted past Palm Jumeirah and Bluewaters Island, someone pointed out Ain Dubai—the giant wheel glowing against the dark sky. People kept getting up to snap photos; I tried but mostly just watched. Then came the live shows: first this Tanoura dancer spinning in layers of color (how do they not get dizzy?), then a guy with a darbuka drum whose hands moved so fast it was kind of hypnotic. There was singing too—English pop songs mixed with Hindi and Arabic hits—and at one point half the boat clapped along out of rhythm. Nobody seemed to mind.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much or feel so relaxed floating through all that glass-and-steel scenery. The crew never hovered but always seemed nearby if you needed anything—a refill or just directions to the restroom (which was surprisingly clean). When we finally looped back to Dubai Harbour Marina, I realized I’d barely checked my phone all evening. That doesn’t happen often anymore.
