The Experience

Is it weird that I was more nervous about looking silly than falling in? The first thing I noticed at the dock was how bright everything felt—sun bouncing off the water, people laughing nearby. Our instructor, Ahmed, handed me a helmet and life jacket (he joked they’d make me look “professional,” which made me laugh because I absolutely didn’t). He explained the basics in this calm way that somehow made jet-powered flight sound normal. I could smell sunscreen and salt, and honestly my hands were shaking a bit.

Once you’re strapped to the flyboard and the jetski engine kicks in, there’s this split-second where you’re just hovering—like your feet forgot gravity for a moment. I wobbled a lot at first (Ahmed kept shouting encouragements over the engine noise), but then suddenly I was up. Not high or graceful, but definitely above water. It’s noisy and wild and kind of hilarious when you faceplant—which I did twice before getting the hang of it. The view is just sky and sea and city behind you; I didn’t expect to feel so…free? Even when I crashed again, it felt good.

The whole session lasted maybe 35 minutes—long enough for my legs to go shaky and for Ahmed to tell me my “superhero pose” needed work. Afterward there was a quick rinse-off with a towel and shower (I’d forgotten how salty my mouth got from all those splashes). Walking back along the marina, hair dripping, I caught myself grinning like an idiot. Still do when I think about it now.
