The Experience
The city faded behind us as we drove out past the last gas station—just sand and sky ahead. The air felt dry but not too hot, with a faint scent of spice from the car’s AC. Our driver, Khalid, grinned before letting some air out of the tires. Then came the dune bashing—honestly, I lost track of how many times I laughed or grabbed the seat. The sand looked almost gold as the sun started to dip. I still remember the crunching sound underfoot when we stopped for photos at the top of a dune; my shoes filled with warm sand in seconds.
At camp, you could hear Arabic music mixing with chatter from other travelers. I tried a short camel ride—awkward at first, but kind of peaceful once you get used to the swaying. There were low cushions everywhere, and someone handed me a tiny cup of cardamom coffee and sticky dates. The henna artist worked fast; my hand smelled faintly floral for hours after. Dinner was a mix of grilled meats and salads—nothing fancy, but it hit the spot after all that bouncing around. The real surprise? The fire show. You feel the heat even from a distance. The belly dancer got everyone clapping along, and by then, the sky was full of stars you never see in the city.
