The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the silence—just that soft crunch of tires as our 4WD rolled deeper into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Our guide, Ahmed, had this way of pointing out gazelles before anyone else even spotted them. He handed out cold water (blessed relief), and we all tried to catch glimpses of oryx through the window glare. It’s odd how quickly city noise disappears out here; you can almost hear your own heartbeat. The air tasted a little dusty but clean, if that makes sense.

We stopped at this spot called the Whispering Angel for sunset—someone poured sparkling date juice into real glasses (not plastic, which I weirdly appreciated). There was this faint smell of something sweet—camel milk chocolate maybe? I’m not sure. Everyone sort of fell quiet watching the sun drop behind the dunes, except for Ahmed who told us a story about his grandmother’s old tea rituals. I tried to say “shukran” properly; he laughed and corrected me, but in a nice way.

Dinner happened in this tucked-away majlis, like a tent but somehow fancier—soft cushions, low tables, flickering lanterns everywhere. The lamb was slow-cooked (zarb style) and honestly so tender it barely needed chewing. Someone played oud music in the background; it made everything feel a bit dreamlike. There were little plates of mezzeh and warm bread that kept appearing like magic. At one point I just leaned back and stared at the sky—so many stars it didn’t seem real. There was a falconer too; he let us hold his bird for a second (the talons are sharper than you’d think).

I skipped sandboarding but watched two people wipe out laughing—it looked harder than it sounds. The fire show after dinner was wild; you could feel the heat from where we sat. On the drive back to Dubai, everyone got quiet again, maybe tired or just full or maybe thinking about their own lives back home—I know I was. Sometimes you don’t realize how much you needed silence until you get it.
