The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little nervous when our driver, Khalid, grinned and said “Hold tight!” before we hit the first dune. The Toyota Land Cruiser felt like it floated and crashed at the same time — sand spraying up against the windows, my stomach somewhere between my shoes and the sky. My friend tried to film but mostly caught us laughing (and maybe me squealing once). The Dubai desert is so much bigger than I’d pictured; by the time we stopped for photos, all I could hear was wind and our guide’s voice explaining how these dunes have shaped Bedouin life for centuries. He pointed out a falcon circling overhead — I never would’ve noticed on my own.

The sun dipped lower as we reached this sort of glowing fortress in the middle of nowhere — honestly, it looked like something from an old storybook. Inside, there were carpets everywhere and people lounging on cushions with plates piled high from the live BBQ. The smell of grilled lamb and cardamom coffee drifted around; I probably ate too much before realizing there was still dessert coming (no regrets). There was a moment during the belly dancing show when everyone just fell quiet except for the music — I still think about that hush sometimes. And then someone handed me sweet tea and showed me how to say “shukran” properly; Li laughed when I tried to say it in Arabic — probably butchered it.

After dinner, we wandered outside to try camel riding (awkward but fun) and watched a guy paint henna designs on my friend’s hand. It started to get chilly — not cold exactly, but enough that you notice your skin tingling under the stars. The fire show was wild; sparks flying up into that huge dark sky while someone played oud in the background. There was even a little souq where I bought a tiny brass lamp for luck. We didn’t do quad biking this time but saw some folks roaring off into the distance — next time for sure.
