The Experience

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about dune bashing in Al Madam. The sand looked almost too perfect—like it would swallow our 4x4 whole. Our driver (Ahmed? He just grinned and told us to call him “the captain”) cranked up some music I’d never heard before, then off we went—bouncing and sliding for what felt like ages but was probably just half an hour. I had sand in my teeth from laughing so hard. The sunset out there is a weird pink-orange I can’t describe. You have to see it.

After that wild ride, we stopped for a break—some folks tried the quad bikes but I just wanted to stand still for a second and listen. There’s this hush in the desert at dusk, only broken by someone shouting in Arabic and the distant whine of engines. Our guide handed out bottled water (needed it), then herded us toward the camp where everything smelled like grilled meat and sweet shisha smoke. I tried henna for the first time—my attempt at small talk with the artist ended in giggles because my Arabic is terrible.

The camel ride was short but honestly pretty fun once you get past the wobble. Sand skiing looked easy until I wiped out (twice). Dinner was laid-back: BBQ chicken, rice, salads—the kind of food that tastes better after you’ve been outside all day. The belly dance and fire show were louder than I expected; people clapped along and one kid nearly caught his sleeve on fire reaching for bread. It felt like everyone forgot their phones for a while—which is rare these days.
