The Experience

Handing me the helmet, our guide grinned—“Don’t worry, everyone looks awkward at first.” I believed him, especially after watching my friend nearly topple her quad bike before we’d even left the parking lot. Then came dune bashing in a 4x4. Honestly, I thought it would be tamer, but our driver had other plans; he laughed every time we squealed going over a steep drop. My hands were sweating from gripping the seat so tight. Later at camp, there was this smell of charcoal and spices drifting from the BBQ area while someone handed us tiny cups of Arabic coffee—bitter but somehow comforting.

I tried shisha for the first time (cherry flavor, which tasted more like cough syrup than anything) while watching a Tanura dancer spin for what felt like ages without getting dizzy. There were camels lounging nearby, looking unimpressed by all the fuss. A woman painted henna on my hand—her touch was quick but gentle—and then she smiled when I tried to thank her in Arabic (probably butchered it). By nightfall, lights flickered around the camp and everyone drifted between laughter and quiet stares at the fire show. We left with sand in our socks and a hundred random photos—some blurry, all real.
