The Experience

The first thing I noticed as we left Dubai was how quickly the city faded into this endless stretch of sand — not that I was watching the skyline, honestly, because our driver (Ali) was already cracking jokes about “city people” getting carsick on dunes. I laughed but held onto the seat anyway. The drive out to Lahbab Desert took maybe 45 minutes? Hard to say; time moves weirdly when you’re half-excited, half-worried you’ll embarrass yourself in front of strangers. The air changed too — warmer, drier, with this faint smell of spice and dust that clung to everything.

Dune bashing is… well, it’s loud. Tires hissing over sand, everyone yelling or laughing (sometimes both), and Ali whooping like he’s done this a thousand times (he probably has). There’s a moment where you crest the highest dune and everything goes quiet except for wind — sun sliding down behind us, gold everywhere. We stopped for photos; my shoes filled with sand immediately. Worth it though. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.

At camp they handed us tiny cups of sweet tea and dates — I tried to thank them in Arabic but mostly got shy smiles back. There were camels waiting nearby (I named mine “Sandy,” original I know), and after a wobbly ride we tried sandboarding which is way harder than it looks on Instagram. My friend fell flat; everyone cheered anyway. Later there was henna painting (the artist drew a flower on my wrist) and a falcon perched so close I could see every feather ruffle in the breeze.

Dinner smelled like charcoal and cumin — grilled meat, salads, something with chickpeas I couldn’t pronounce (Ali laughed when I tried). Sitting cross-legged under string lights, we watched dancers spin impossibly fast and someone breathing fire like it was no big deal. It all felt sort of surreal but warm at the same time. By the time we drove back to Dubai, sand still in my socks, I realized how much lighter everything felt — like some part of me stayed out there with the dunes.
