The Experience

Someone hands me a tiny cup of cardamom coffee before I’ve even found my seat in the Land Cruiser. Our driver—Sajid, I think he said—grins in the rearview and tells us to buckle up. The city disappears fast. Suddenly it’s just sand and this weird golden quiet, except for our group’s nervous laughter as we hit the first dune. I tried shisha for the first time—minty-sweet and strange—and watched as some tourists dressed up for photos in those flowing robes. It all felt both touristy and weirdly real at once.
