The Experience

I didn’t expect to laugh so hard trying to balance on a sandboard — I mean, it looks easy until you’re actually sliding down those golden dunes just outside Dubai. Our driver Khalid grinned in the mirror before flooring it for dune bashing; my stomach did that rollercoaster flip and someone behind me squealed (not naming names). The light was already changing when we stopped at the tallest dune — warm wind, that burnt-sugar smell of sand, and everyone suddenly quiet as the sun dropped behind endless ripples. I still think about that view sometimes.

The camp felt like another world after the drive. We got this proper welcome — dates pressed into our hands, tiny cups of hot Arabic coffee (I tried to say “shukran” right; Khalid just laughed). There were carpets everywhere and low cushions, and honestly I could’ve just stayed there sipping tea all night. But then someone handed me a falafel and pointed out the camels. I’d never ridden one before — they’re taller than you expect, gentle but stubborn. The ride was short but weirdly calming, even with kids giggling nearby.

Later there was this smoky scent drifting from the BBQ grill while music started up — not too loud at first, just enough to feel it in your chest. The belly dancer spun out of nowhere, sequins catching firelight; a few people tried to copy her moves (I did not attempt). The Tanoura dancer’s skirt was a blur of color. Somewhere between bites of grilled chicken and sweet sticky baklava, I realized how far away city noise felt. It’s funny what sticks with you: the heat off the sand even after sunset, strangers sharing shisha smoke and stories in half a dozen languages. Didn’t expect to feel so at home out there.
