The Experience

There’s this moment when the 4x4 lurches sideways on the dunes outside Dubai and everyone just bursts out laughing — not because it’s comfortable (it isn’t), but because you can’t help it. Our driver, Ahmed, kept one hand on the wheel and the other pointing at things I’d never have noticed: a fox track here, a pale green shrub that somehow survives out here. The sand gets everywhere — I mean everywhere — but honestly, it’s part of the fun. I tried sandboarding and ended up with half the desert in my shoes. Didn’t care.

Later, we stopped for photos just as the sun started sinking behind these huge golden waves of sand. There was this weird hush except for a couple kids shouting in Arabic somewhere down the slope. My friend tried to get on a camel (not as easy as it looks) while I just stood there breathing in that dry, almost sweet air. The guide handed us tea that tasted smoky and strong — I still think about that taste sometimes when I’m back home stuck in traffic.

The camp was already glowing by the time we got there — lanterns swinging a bit in the breeze, carpets everywhere. Someone offered me dates and told me how to say thank you in Arabic (I butchered it; she laughed). We tried shisha (not really my thing but hey), watched henna being painted on hands way steadier than mine, and then just sort of melted into pillows around low tables while plates of grilled chicken and salads kept appearing. The belly dancers came out after dark — all swirling colors and music so loud you could feel it in your chest. By the time we piled back into the jeep for Dubai, my hair smelled like barbecue smoke and something sweet I couldn’t place.
