The Experience

The pickup comes right on time, but the moment you climb into the 4x4, you realize the dune bashing part of this Dubai desert safari isn't going to be a gentle ride. The driver—a certified guide who knows the red dunes of Lehbab like he's driven them a thousand times—takes the first slope at an angle that makes you grip the seat. Thirty-five minutes of this, and your stomach catches up with your brain. The sand is genuinely red out here, not the golden stuff you see in postcards, and when the SUV finally stops for photos at sunset, you're somewhere in the middle of actual desert, no buildings, no roads, just dunes rolling out in every direction.

The traditional camp arrives after the adrenaline settles. They greet you with Arabic coffee and Legemat—these small, warm fried pastries that taste like honey and cardamom—and suddenly you're sitting on cushions while someone offers to draw henna on your hands or feet. The camel ride is shorter than you'd think, maybe ten minutes, but it's the kind of thing that feels stranger and more real than photos suggest. After that comes the food: a buffet spread of grilled meat, vegetables, rice, salads, and desserts, with unlimited water, tea, coffee and soft drinks throughout. The shisha lounge is open if you want to try it, no extra charge.

The entertainment happens after dinner, around the campfire under actual stars. A belly dancer performs first, then the Tanura dancer—this spinning figure in a massive skirt that lights up and changes colors as he spins—and then a fire dancer who does things with flames that make you lean back. It's tourist entertainment, yes, but it's also genuinely well-done, and the camp staff clearly do this every night. By the time you're heading back to your hotel, it's a two-hour drive through the dark with traditional Arabic music playing, and you're tired enough that it feels like the right way to end it.
