The experience

You're picked up from your Dubai or Sharjah hotel in an air-conditioned 4x4 and driven to the Lehbab desert, where the red dunes begin. Before the main event, you stop at the quad bike and dune buggy area. You can book a ride in advance or decide on the spot, depending on how much adrenaline you want. The dune bashing itself is a 30-minute ride across the open sand, followed by a photo stop on a red dune where the light is best. Sandboards come out next, and you slide down the dunes as the sun drops toward the horizon.

At the Al Awir Bedouin camp, the pace shifts. You ride a camel, get henna painted on your hands, and dress in traditional Arabic clothes for photos. Welcome drinks and fresh dates arrive first, then the entertainment begins: two belly dance performances, a Tanoura dancer in a spinning skirt, and a fire show that closes out the night. The buffet runs the whole time: vegetarian and meat options at the live BBQ station, plus unlimited tea, coffee, soft drinks and water. Washroom facilities and a sheesha lounge are open if you want to settle in between acts.

The return drive to your hotel wraps up the evening. The whole outing takes six hours from pickup to drop-off.
