The Experience

Ever wondered what silence feels like when it’s just you and the sand? That’s how our Dubai desert safari started—well, after the Land Cruiser picked us up from the hotel (right on time, which honestly surprised me). Our guide, Ahmed, had this easy laugh and played old Arabic pop on the drive out. The city faded fast behind us. I kept rolling down the window just to catch that dry, warm air—smelled faintly sweet, like dust and something floral I couldn’t name.

Dune bashing was wilder than I expected. We clung to the seats as Ahmed steered up these steep red dunes near Lahbab—my stomach did flips but in a good way. He stopped so we could try sandboarding (I fell immediately; my friend got it on her second go), and then we all just stood there watching the sun drop behind endless ripples of sand. It was quieter than any place I’ve ever been. Someone nearby let out this whoop that echoed forever—I still think about that sound.

The camp felt almost like a mirage at first—lanterns flickering, smoke rising from grills. We tried camel riding (the camels looked unimpressed by us), then sat for henna while sipping sweet kahwah coffee. Dinner was smoky lamb kebabs and salads under a sky that kept getting darker until suddenly there were stars everywhere. There was belly dancing, then a fire show—at one point I caught myself grinning for no reason at all. On the way back to Dubai, everyone was half-asleep or just quietly replaying bits of the night in their heads. Hard to explain why it sticks with you like that.
