The Experience

“You see that line in the sand? That’s where the fun starts,” our driver Rashid grinned as we bounced along the edge of the Dubai dunes. He had this way of telling stories—half in English, half in Arabic—that made even the drive out from the city feel like part of the adventure. The city lights faded behind us, and suddenly it was all gold and silence except for the hum of our 4x4. I kept catching whiffs of warm sand and something sweet—maybe dates from Rashid’s dashboard stash?

We stopped at a little rest area where some folks tried quad bikes (I chickened out—next time maybe). Then came dune bashing, which is honestly wilder than I expected. My heart jumped every time we crested a ridge; Rashid just laughed and cranked up his old Khaliji playlist. Somewhere in there I got sand in my shoes and didn’t even care. Sunset hit while we were still out there—soft light on endless dunes—and I tried to take photos but none of them really caught it.

The camp was quieter than I thought it’d be. A woman painted henna on my hand while her daughter watched cartoons on a phone nearby. There was Arabic coffee (bitter but good) and dates, plus a smoky smell from the grill drifting over everything. We took turns on a very patient camel who seemed completely unimpressed by all of us city people wobbling around on his back. The BBQ dinner was better than I expected—grilled chicken, spicy rice, salads—and then everyone gathered for the belly dance and fire show. The Tanura dancer spun so fast I got dizzy just watching him.

I’m still thinking about that moment after dinner when most people were busy with selfies or shisha pipes, but I just sat back on a cushion and listened to the wind moving across the dunes. You don’t really get quiet like that back in Dubai—at least not where I’m from.
