The experience

The tour picks you up from your hotel around 3 pm and heads toward the Hajjar Mountains and the red dunes. Once there, a professional driver takes over for the dune bashing: a galvanizing ride across the high sand that is the centerpiece of the afternoon. You'll stop at a picture point to watch the dusk light hit the dunes before it fades, then move on to the Bedouin-style camp where the evening unfolds.

At camp, the entertainment and food take over. You get a short camel ride, henna art applied to your hands, and access to the hubbly bubbly corners. The live shows (Tanoura dancing and belly dance performances, plus fire shows) run through the evening while you eat from the international BBQ dinner buffet, which includes vegetarian options. Arabic coffee, dates and sweets arrive as you settle in, and mineral water flows throughout. The whole experience is shared-basis transport, so you'll be with other travelers in the 4x4 and at the camp.

If dune bashing alone appeals to you more than the full camp evening, a quad bike experience is available as an optional add-on at checkout. The 6-hour window means you're back at your hotel by nightfall, so the tour fits into a single evening without eating into the next day.
