The Experience

The driver picked us up right on time, but then spent ten minutes circling the hotel because the gate had shifted since the last run. No big deal — he knew the area well enough to find it anyway. Once we were out of the city and into the Lahbab desert, the real thing started: forty-five minutes of actual dune bashing in a Toyota Land Cruiser with a professional driver who had the UAE safari license and knew exactly how fast to take each slope. Your stomach does something different when the sand drops away beneath you.

By the time we rolled into camp, the sun was already low and orange, which is when the photography happens — you get changed into traditional Arabic dress and stand around while the light does the work. The camp itself is set up for the whole evening: there's sheesha to smoke if you want it, henna painting happening in one corner, a camel waiting to be ridden, and sand boarding if you've still got energy. The welcome comes with Arabic coffee and tea, dates and fresh fruit, all included. Nobody's rushing you through any of it.

Dinner is a buffet with both vegetarian and meat dishes, unlimited soft drinks and water, and then the entertainment starts. There's a light and sound display around the camp, a fire show, two rounds of Tanoura dancing (the spinning skirt thing), and two live belly dance performances with traditional music playing. It's not subtle, but it's also not trying to be — this is the Dubai desert safari experience, and they're giving you the full version. The whole thing wraps up with a drive back to your hotel or residence, which means you don't have to think about transport home.

The tour runs on a sharing basis, so you're in a vehicle with five other people, all picked up from different hotels around Dubai. The drivers are licensed by the UAE government and the vehicles are fully insured, which matters when you're doing something like dune bashing. If you're traveling with small children, they can bring infant seats or a pram, and the pace is steady enough that it works for most fitness levels.
