The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how the sand in Dubai’s desert actually glows red—like someone turned up the color just for us. Our driver (Ahmed, who joked about his playlist being “desert-approved”) picked us up right on time, and before I knew it we were bouncing along in a 4x4. The dune bashing was way more intense than I expected—my stomach did flips but honestly, it was kind of addictive. There’s this moment when you stop at the top of a dune for sunset, and everything goes quiet except for the wind. I tried to take a photo but it doesn’t really capture how soft the air feels or how the light makes everyone look a little golden.

After that rush, we slid down the dunes on sandboards—definitely harder than snowboarding (I wiped out twice and got sand everywhere). The camp itself felt lively but not crowded; kids running around, someone playing oud in the corner. Ahmed introduced us to some of his friends working there—one woman painted henna on my hand while telling me about her family back home. There was shisha smoke drifting around and people lining up to try on these bright Arabic costumes for photos—I tried one but felt ridiculous in the headpiece. Li laughed when I tried to say thank you in Arabic—probably butchered it.

The food came out just as night settled in. The BBQ buffet had these grilled meats that smelled so good I forgot to take pictures first (which is rare for me). Sitting outside with sweet tea and watching the belly dancers move—there’s something about music echoing off the sand that sticks with you. The fire show got everyone cheering; even Ahmed looked impressed. By then it was cool enough that you needed a light jacket, which I didn’t expect after sweating all afternoon.

I still think about that weird silence after the shows ended—just stars above us and a few lanterns flickering by the tents. It wasn’t perfect (I’m still finding sand in my shoes), but that’s what makes it stick in my head.
