The experience

The tour starts with a pickup from your Dubai hotel and a drive into the desert to catch the sunset over the dunes. The 4x4 vehicle plunges low into deep ditches and climbs high over the summits, so the first part is the adrenaline: dune bashing at speed across the golden sand. By the time you reach the traditional Bedouin campsite, the light is fading and the camp's low tables, carpets and cushions are set up for the evening ahead.

At camp you're welcomed with Arabic coffee and dates, then the activities branch out. Ride a camel into the dunes if you want it, or try sand boarding instead. Get henna painted on your hands, smoke a flavored shisha pipe, walk across the sand, put on traditional Arabic dress for photos. A falcon sits on your shoulder for pictures (this costs extra). Snacks and unlimited water and soft drinks come before the main event: a buffet of grilled meats, salads, entrees and desserts.

The evening ends with three performances: a belly dancer, a Tanura dancer in a spinning skirt, and a fire show, all under the open sky. The whole experience runs six hours from pickup to return.
