The Experience

The first thing I remember is the color — that kind of burnt orange you only get in the Dubai desert, especially when the sun starts dropping. Our driver (Ali, who joked he’s been driving these dunes longer than he’s been driving on roads) pulled up right outside my hotel just before sunset. The city faded fast behind us. There’s this moment when you realize the sand is everywhere — in your shoes, under your nails, even in your teeth if you laugh too much during dune bashing (which I did). Honestly, I thought I’d be scared but it was more like being on a rollercoaster made of sand and sky.

When we finally stopped bouncing around, Ali pointed out some camels waiting nearby — they looked so chill about everything. The air smelled like warm dust and something sweet — dates maybe? At the camp later, we were handed tiny cups of Arabic coffee and soft dates. Someone was already rolling out carpets and lighting lanterns. It felt old-fashioned but not fake; people chatted quietly or tried shisha for the first time. I got henna painted on my hand by a woman who didn’t speak much English but smiled when she saw me trying to copy her pattern.

I didn’t expect to enjoy the performances as much as I did — the tanoura dancer spun so long I got dizzy just watching him, and there was this fire show that made everyone gasp at least once. The food came out all at once: grilled chicken that tasted smoky, heaps of rice and salads. Sitting there eating under a sky that actually showed stars (not like back home), I felt weirdly calm. There’s something about sharing food with strangers after a day like that — it sticks with you longer than you’d think.
