The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the color — those red sand dunes outside Dubai almost looked painted when we pulled up. Our guide, Kareem, handed out cold water and grinned like he knew what was coming next. I’m not much of an adrenaline junkie but somehow ended up on a quad bike anyway, gripping the handlebars way too tight while the wind whipped past my ears. The sand felt softer than I expected — it gets everywhere, by the way — and I could smell something sweet drifting from the camp even before we got there.

Kareem had this way of making dune bashing feel less scary than it probably should be. He cranked up some Arabic music and just went for it — up and over these golden waves of sand that made my stomach drop (in a good way). At one point he stopped so we could try sandboarding. I wiped out immediately but honestly? It was fun to just flop down laughing while everyone else cheered each other on. We caught the sunset right after — I still think about how quiet it got for a second, all orange light and long shadows.

The camp itself felt almost like stepping into someone’s backyard party — dates and coffee waiting at the entrance, people chatting in little clusters under lanterns. There were baby camels (I’m not kidding) and a souq where an old man tried to teach me how to say “thank you” in Arabic. Li laughed when I tried to repeat it — probably butchered it. Dinner was this huge BBQ spread with smoky grilled meat and salads; I kept going back for more hummus. The shows started after dark: dancers in swirling skirts, fire performers who made half the crowd gasp, even a singer who got us clapping along without really knowing why.

I didn’t expect to care so much about henna painting or watching kids try on traditional dress for photos, but there’s something about being out there under desert stars that makes everything feel a bit softer around the edges. On the drive back to Dubai (which was mercifully smooth), Kareem asked if we’d come again. Not sure what I answered — maybe just smiled out the window at all that empty space rolling past.
