The Experience

I didn’t expect my heart to pound just from sitting in a 4x4, but the first time our driver floored it over a dune outside Dubai, I actually let out this awkward laugh (pretty sure everyone heard). The sand was everywhere—fine dust sneaking into my shoes, even though I thought I’d tied them tight. Our guide Khalid grinned in the mirror and said something about “warming up”—I guess dune bashing is just the start of this desert safari.

The real surprise was the buggy ride. I’d never driven anything like that before—felt like piloting a go-kart on Mars. Thirty minutes goes fast when you’re half-nervous and half-ecstatic; I kept getting sand in my teeth because I couldn’t stop smiling. There’s this dry wind that smells faintly sweet, almost like sunbaked grass. At one point I stalled out on a slope and some local kids waved at me from their camels—made me feel both ridiculous and weirdly proud.

Later we tried sandboarding (I fell twice), then took turns riding a camel that blinked at me like he’d seen it all before. By sunset we were led to a camp lit by lanterns where the air smelled of grilled meat and shisha smoke. Dinner was loud—everyone talking over each other—and then suddenly quiet when the belly dancer started. The fire show was wild; sparks flying so close you could feel the heat on your face. Afterward, someone painted henna on my hand while I sipped sweet tea and tried not to smudge it. It’s funny how quickly you get used to sitting on rugs under open sky with strangers who don’t feel like strangers anymore.
