The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Kampala residence or a meeting point, then a drive east through Mabira forest (Uganda's largest rainforest, home to mammals and bird species) to reach the Nile in Jinja. Once at the briefing point, you'll meet other rafters, eat breakfast, and listen to the resident guides explain what's ahead. The rafts slide down a ramp into the water, and you receive a safety demonstration before launching onto a flat pool for final instructions on paddling and positioning.
From there, the guide redirects your raft into eight major rapids, each graded according to water speed, wave size and difficulty. Grade 1 means fast-moving water with small waves. Grade 5 means extremely long, violent rapids with obstacles that demand precise boat handling. You choose the intensity based on your experience and comfort: straightforward rapids with clear channels, moderate irregular waves that may swamp an open canoe, intense but predictable rapids requiring sharp technique, or the most challenging sections. The river meanders through rocks and around the landscape, and the guide reads the water and calls the strokes.
The activity runs 6 to 8 hours total, including the drive, briefing, paddling and return. Rafting gear, all meals and bottled water are provided. A live English-speaking guide stays with your group throughout. Children from age 12 are welcome, though the activity requires at least moderate physical fitness and is not suitable for anyone with spinal injuries, pregnancy, or cardiovascular concerns.

Is this one for you?The day demands 6 to 8 hours and moderate fitness because you're paddling through eight major rapids, not watching from a boat: the intensity of the water (grade 1 to 5) is your choice, but the paddling itself is the point.
