experience

What’s the experience like?

The alarm went off before sunrise—one of those mornings where you can still hear crickets outside. By 6:00 am, our guide and driver were waiting at the hotel entrance, both wide awake and ready to go. The city was just starting to stir as we left Kampala behind. The road east is lined with fruit stalls and boda bodas zipping past; you’ll spot women balancing baskets on their heads even this early.

We rolled down the windows as we entered Mabira Forest. There’s this earthy smell—kind of sweet, kind of damp—that hits you right away. Our guide pointed out monkeys darting between trees (if you blink, you’ll miss them). After a quick stop for some chapati and tea at a roadside stand, we continued on to Jinja. The Source of the Nile Monument isn’t flashy, but standing there, hearing about explorers who tried to find this very spot—it’s something else. You can see fishermen already out on the water by mid-morning.

The real rush came with white water rafting on the Nile. They gave us a safety talk that felt longer than it probably was (nerves do that), then handed out helmets and paddles. The current is no joke—cold spray in your face wakes you up fast! Afterward, I was soaked but grinning like an idiot. There’s time to change into dry clothes before grabbing a cold drink and heading back toward Kampala. On the drive home, everyone’s quiet for a bit—tired but happy.
