Equator tour from Kampala: See water swirl both ways
Watch water spiral in opposite directions at the 0-degree line
A day trip from Kampala to the equator at Kayabwe, where a guide demonstrates how magnetic fields make water drain clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, then straight down at the 0-degree latitude itself. The drive takes about two hours each way. You'll have time for lunch and browsing craft shops before returning to the city. Pickup from Kampala is included, as is an air-conditioned vehicle and lunch.

The experience
If you have a free afternoon or a morning to spare in Kampala, this trip takes you south along the Mpigi-Masaka highway to Kayabwe, where the equator actually crosses Uganda. The drive is roughly two hours, so you can depart around 7:30 am and still have the bulk of the day to explore. A guide meets you at the equator site and walks you through the core experiment: water poured into a basin drains clockwise on the northern side of the line, counter-clockwise on the southern side, and straight down at the 0-degree latitude itself. The magnetic fields that cause this shift are invisible, but the water's behavior makes them visible.
After the experiment, you'll have lunch on-site and time to wander the craft shops scattered around the equator marker: the kind of place where you can pick up small souvenirs without feeling rushed. The return journey follows the same highway back to Kampala. The whole outing, from departure to return, spans anywhere from five to twelve hours depending on how long you linger and what time you start, so it fits comfortably into a single day without eating into evening plans.
What’s included
- Air-conditioned vehicle for the round trip from Kampala.
- lunch at the equator site.
- a live English-speaking guide who leads the water experiment and explains the magnetic field effect at each hemisphere.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
How long is the drive from Kampala to the equator at Kayabwe?
The drive takes about two hours each way along the Mpigi-Masaka highway, so you'll spend roughly four hours in the vehicle for the full round trip.
What exactly happens during the water experiment at the equator?
A guide demonstrates how water drains in different directions depending on which side of the 0-degree latitude line you're on: clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere, counter-clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere, and straight down at the equator itself, all caused by the magnetic fields at that latitude.
Is lunch included, and what else is provided?
Lunch is included at the equator site. You also get an air-conditioned vehicle for the drive and a live guide in English throughout the day. Pickup from Kampala is arranged as part of the booking.
Will there be time to shop or rest during the visit?
Yes. After the experiment, you'll have time to have lunch and relax at the site, and there are craft shops nearby where you can browse and buy souvenirs before heading back to Kampala.
