The experience

“You’ll get dust in your teeth,” our driver grinned as we bounced along the backroads outside Side. He wasn’t wrong. The Taurus Mountains aren’t what I pictured: olive trees everywhere, and the air smelled like wild herbs and diesel. We stopped for photos at a dam I’d never heard of (the water was this weird blue-green), and nobody rushed us. One of the guides pointed out some eagles circling overhead. He said they nest here every spring. I tried to snap a photo but mostly got my own thumb.

The summit view was…well, it’s hard to describe without sounding cheesy. You can see all the way down to the valley where tiny villages are just dots. There was this old guy selling tea out of a battered thermos: his hands shook when he poured it for me but he smiled anyway. The sun was sharp up there. I still have a little sunburn on my nose from leaning over the railing too long. After that we headed down toward Green Lake for lunch, fish straight from the grill (bones and all), bread that tasted smoky, and something pickled I couldn’t pronounce. Li laughed when I tried to say it in Turkish, probably butchered it.

The boat ride on Green Lake felt almost too calm after all that bumping around in jeeps. Some people swam. I just dangled my feet off the side and watched dragonflies skimming the water. It’s funny how quiet it gets out there. The only sound is kids splashing or someone dropping their phone (which happened). On the way back we stopped at Manavgat Waterfall for one last photo break. You have to pay to get in but honestly? Worth it just for that cool mist on your face after a dusty day.
