The experience
Hotel pickup in Izmir starts the morning, and the drive takes you to Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage site built from warm mineral water that has left behind vast white calcium terraces and pools. You walk barefoot across them, feeling the travertine beneath your feet as you move between the thermal pools. The water is warm year-round, fed by hot springs that have shaped this landscape for millennia. This is not a quick stop: the terraces demand time to cross and explore at your own pace within the group.
Hierapolis sits on the plateau above Pamukkale, and the guide will walk you through the ruins of this ancient city. You'll see the Odeon, the Roman Theatre, and the Roman Baths: a 2nd-century structure built from local travertine and once covered in polychrome marble. The baths are massive. One of the barrel vaults collapsed in a 4th-century earthquake and was rebuilt in brick, and you can still see the difference. The guide explains the city's history as a center of early Christianity, where the Apostle Philip lived and was buried. The scale of what remains makes the ancient presence tangible.
The tour runs 12 to 14 hours door-to-door, with lunch included and an air-conditioned vehicle for transport. Skip-the-line tickets for Pamukkale are available through the guide (the entrance fee is 30 euros). Cleopatra's Pool, a thermal spring within the site, charges 400 Turkish lira separately. Note that restoration work is scheduled throughout 2025, which may affect some areas of the terraces.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 7 years); Infant (under 3): free.
Can I swim in the thermal pools at Pamukkale, or just walk through them?
You can wade and relax in the thermal pools themselves. The warm mineral water flows across and collects in the white terraces, and you're free to step into the pools as part of the tour. Bring a swimsuit if you plan to spend time in the water.
What is Hierapolis and why is it worth visiting?
Hierapolis is an ancient city that sits on the plateau above Pamukkale. It was an important center in the early Christian era: the Apostle Philip lived there and was buried in the city. The ruins include a Roman Theatre, an Odeon, and Roman Baths built in the 2nd century from local travertine stone. The guide will walk you through these structures and explain their history.
How much time do I spend actually at Pamukkale versus traveling?
The full tour is 12 to 14 hours including hotel pickup and return, but that covers the drive from Izmir, time at both Pamukkale and Hierapolis, and lunch. You'll have substantial time to explore the white terraces and wade in the pools, and to walk through the Hierapolis ruins with the guide.
Is the guide English-speaking, and will I understand the history?
The guide is a licensed professional who speaks English and will explain the history of both Pamukkale and Hierapolis as you move through the sites. The small group size means you can ask questions and interact with the guide throughout the day.
What should I bring or wear for this tour?
Wear comfortable walking shoes for the Hierapolis ruins, but bring a swimsuit and water shoes or sandals for the thermal pools. You'll be walking barefoot on the white terraces and wading into the warm water. Sunscreen and a hat are essential, as there is little shade on the terraces. The vehicle is air-conditioned for the drive.
