The experience
The tour picks you up from your hotel in Izmir and drives through the Turkish countryside to Pamukkale, a landscape shaped by thousands of years of mineral-rich hot spring water flowing down the mountainside. The white calcite terraces are the draw. You'll walk barefoot across them and see why they've been called one of Turkey's most unique natural wonders. The pools hold warm water year-round, and you can swim in Cleopatra's Pool, named for the legendary figure said to have bathed there.
Hierapolis, the ancient city perched above the terraces, is where you spend time with the guide exploring the Odeon, the Roman Baths and the Theatre. The Hierapolis Archaeology Museum is nearby if you want to see statues, sarcophagi and small artifacts from the site. A stop at an onyx factory shows how the local stone is shaped into decorative pieces using both traditional and modern methods. Lunch is included and eaten somewhere during the day.
The minibus stays air-conditioned throughout, and the guide handles the route and the pacing. You're back at your hotel by evening, with the return timed so cruise passengers can make their ship departure. Entry to Pamukkale costs 30 Turkish lira and entry to Cleopatra's Pool costs 600 lira. You pay these directly to the guide, who can buy skip-the-line tickets if you want to avoid the queue at the gate.

Yes, you swim in Cleopatra's Pool, which holds warm mineral-rich water year-round. The pool entrance fee is 600 Turkish lira, paid to the guide. You'll also walk barefoot across the white travertine terraces, where the water flows but you don't swim.
What is Hierapolis and what will I see there?
Hierapolis is an ancient city built above the Pamukkale terraces, known as the "Holy City" because it was evangelized by Paul and Epaphras in the early Christian era.
