The experience
Your guide meets you at 9:30 AM and drives you straight to Pamukkale's white terraces. The calcium pools are fed by hot spring water that has built these formations over millennia, and you walk barefoot across them. The water is warm, the mineral-rich pools are shallow, and the white travertine beneath your feet is the reason UNESCO listed this site as a World Heritage property. The terraces are the centrepiece, but they're only half the day.
Hierapolis, the ancient city built on the ridge above, is where the tour spends its second half. You'll see the Roman theatre carved into the hillside, the necropolis with its rows of tombs, the Domitian Gate, the Latrina, the Cathedral, and the Plutonium: a cave where toxic volcanic gases once killed animals and priests who ventured too close. The Cleopatra Antique Pool sits at the base of the thermal springs. The water there is warm year-round and flows from the same source that built the white terraces below. Lunch is included during the day, and your guide explains the history as you move through the sites.
Karahayıt's red spring water terraces are also on the route: a separate thermal system with its own mineral composition that stains the travertine rust-colored, a striking contrast to Pamukkale's white. The tour ends at 4 PM with a return to your hotel.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (8 to 17 years); Child (4 to 7 years); Infant (under 4): free.
What exactly are the white terraces at Pamukkale?
Pamukkale's white terraces are calcium deposits left behind by hot spring water flowing down the hillside over thousands of years. The water is warm and mineral-rich, and it pools in shallow basins across the white travertine. You walk barefoot across them during the tour.
Will I have time to swim or soak in the thermal pools?
The tour includes time in the thermal pools at Pamukkale where you can walk and wade in the warm water. The Cleopatra Antique Pool in Hierapolis also has warm thermal water, though entry to that pool is not included in the tour price.
How much walking is involved in this tour?
You'll walk across the terraces at Pamukkale barefoot and explore the Hierapolis site on foot, moving between the theatre, baths, necropolis and other ruins spread across the ancient city. The terrain is uneven in places, and the walk is moderate in pace over the full day.
What's included in the lunch?
Lunch is provided during the tour. Drinks are not included, so bring water or purchase beverages separately.
Is there a difference between the white terraces and the red springs at Karahayıt?
Both are thermal spring systems, but Karahayıt's red springs have a different mineral composition that leaves rust-colored travertine deposits instead of white. The tour visits both so you see the contrast.
