The Experience

The first thing I noticed stepping out in Pamukkale was how the air felt — kind of soft, almost steamy, with this faint mineral tang you can taste if you breathe deep enough. We’d left Kusadasi early (the drive is no joke, but honestly I just dozed off for half of it), and by the time we got there, that white shimmer of the terraces looked unreal against the sky. Our guide, Mehmet, kept laughing at my attempts to pronounce “Hierapolis” — apparently I still haven’t nailed it. He told us stories about Roman bathers who came here centuries ago for the same warm water we were dipping our toes into now.

I didn’t expect how strange it would feel walking barefoot over those travertine pools — not slippery like I thought, but sort of chalky and warm underfoot. There were families everywhere, some kids splashing each other while their parents took photos or just sat quietly watching the light change across the water. Mehmet pointed out where Cleopatra’s Pool should have been (closed for renovations right now), and he shrugged like — what can you do? Still, standing there looking out over the valley with your feet in that milky blue water… it’s hard to describe. My friend tried to skip a stone and missed completely; we all cracked up.

Lunch was simple but good — grilled chicken and rice, nothing fancy but after wandering around Hierapolis’ old stones in the sun, it tasted perfect. There was this older couple from Izmir at our table who shared their pickled vegetables with us (spicy as anything). The ruins themselves felt almost quiet compared to the pools: columns lying sideways in wild grass, a breeze that smelled faintly of thyme. I kept thinking about all the people who must’ve walked here before us. The ride back to Kusadasi felt longer somehow; maybe because I didn’t want to leave yet.
