experience

What’s the experience like?

Light filtered through the clouds as we stepped into Sultanahmet Square, the city just waking up around us. Our guide, Emre, knew every shortcut—he led us past sleepy simit vendors setting up their carts and right to the Blue Mosque. I’d seen photos before, but standing beneath those six minarets, hearing the echo of morning prayers inside, it felt different. The scent of old stone and a faint trace of incense lingered in the air. Heads up: women need a scarf to enter—luckily, Emre had extras for anyone who forgot.

We crossed over to Hagia Sophia next. There’s this hush when you walk in—the kind that makes you whisper without thinking. Emre pointed out faded mosaics from Justinian’s time and explained how this place switched from church to mosque to museum, and now back again. Outside, by the Hippodrome, he showed us where chariot races once roared through what’s now just a quiet plaza dotted with stray cats sunning themselves on ancient stones.

The German Fountain surprised me—a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm II that looks almost out of place among all the Byzantine relics. Its green dome glinted in the early sun while locals filled water bottles at its taps. We finished with an easy stroll through Sultanahmet District; you can still hear snippets of Turkish and laughter drifting from nearby tea gardens. It’s not just history—it’s daily life layered on top of centuries.
