The Experience

We’d barely stepped onto the yacht in Istanbul when our guide, Emre, handed me a glass of homemade lemonade — not too sweet, just sharp enough to wake me up after a long day wandering Sultanahmet. There was this older couple from Izmir already chatting with the crew about football (I only caught half of it), and someone else pointed out how the seagulls were circling for crumbs before we even left the dock. The city felt close but somehow softer from the water — like you could breathe easier out here.

As we drifted up the Bosphorus Strait, Emre started pointing out places I’d only ever seen in photos: Dolmabahce Palace glittering in that sideways evening light, then Ortaköy with its mosque practically hugging the shore. I tried to say “Küçüksu Kasri” and Li laughed — probably butchered it — but Emre just grinned and passed around little plates of baklava and fruit. The bridge connecting Europe and Asia looked almost ordinary until you realize what it means to cross it in this city. Sometimes you get these quick pockets of silence between his stories, just wind and water slapping against the hull.

The snacks were honestly better than I expected (still thinking about those canapés), and there was this herbal smell from someone’s tea mixing with salt air. Rumeli Fortress looked huge from below — I never understood how steep those walls really are until you’re right under them. We sailed by Maiden’s Tower too; Emre told us that old legend about the emperor’s daughter and a snake. It sounded sadder at sunset for some reason.

By the time we circled back toward Galata Tower, Istanbul was all golds and deep blue shadows. Nobody said much for a minute or two — just watched lights flicker on along both sides of the strait. I didn’t expect to feel so calm out there, honestly. Even now, when I hear seagulls back home, I think about that view from the boat — not sure why it sticks like that.
