The Experience

First thing I remember is the sound — not traffic or calls to prayer this time, but the soft clink of glasses and a violin tuning up somewhere behind me. We’d just stepped onto the yacht near Dolmabahce Palace, and the deck still smelled faintly of wood polish and river air. Our guide waved us toward a spot at the rail, right where you could see both banks of Istanbul at once. I kept thinking how close Asia looked from here, almost like you could swim across if you really wanted (don’t try it). The city lights started flickering on as we drifted out — Galata Tower glowing stubbornly above everything else.

The wine was Turkish — dry, a little floral — poured into simple glasses while we floated past the Bosphorus Bridge. Someone handed around plates of grapes and cheese; I dropped a grape trying to look cool and our guide just grinned like he’d seen it happen before. The violinist played something slow and familiar (I wish I’d asked what it was), and for a few minutes everyone got quiet except for some laughter from a couple near the bow. There’s this strange hush that settles over the water at night — even though Istanbul is never really silent, you know? You can smell grilled fish drifting over from Ortaköy if the wind’s right.

We passed Rumeli Fortress all lit up — our guide told us about sultans and sieges but honestly I was distracted by how the fortress walls looked against the dark water. On one side, Beylerbeyi Palace slid by under spotlights; on the other, tiny ferries zipped between continents like they had somewhere urgent to be. It’s weirdly grounding to see people commuting home while you’re sipping wine on a yacht. At one point someone pointed out Maiden’s Tower in the distance — just a small shape with its own little halo of light. I tried to take a photo but my hands were cold from holding my glass too long.

By the time we turned back toward Viaport Marina, most people had drifted into their own conversations or just stared at the skyline in that way you do when you’re trying to memorize something for later. The music faded out slowly; nobody seemed in any rush to leave. Even now I can picture that last view of Galata Bridge under its streetlamps — not sure why that stuck with me so much.
